2018 Highlights: A strong performance across our global network
Chapman Taylor has put in a strong performance across its global network over the past year, with many award-winning schemes opening and new developments getting under way. As existing markets evolve and new ones open up, 2018 has seen our studios constantly innovating and diversifying to meet the needs of new and existing clients.
International growth
As examples of our global reach, we are now working on projects in markets as diverse as Hungary, Vietnam, Mexico and Egypt. From major urban masterplans across China to cutting-edge leisure developments in the Middle East, Chapman Taylor is an industry leader across sectors and around the world.
We recently welcomed a new addition to the Chapman Taylor Group, with a new studio opening in Beijing in September 2018 to work on major urban masterplans in and around the Chinese capital and to complement the work of our Shanghai studio.
We have seen excellent growth in China and across Asia, while other markets continue to expand steadily. In the UK, we are further extending our residential and mixed-use capabilities while our portfolio of transport-orientated projects is growing.

These included winning ‘Best Practice’ at the Urban Design Awards for our sensitive regeneration masterplan for the medieval centre of Aachen in Germany – Altstadtquartier Büchel – and ‘Best Futura Mega Project’ at the 2018 MIPIM Awards for the Mui Dinh Ecopark masterplan in Vietnam.
The first of its kind for France, Shopping Promenade Coeur Picardie in Amiens was awarded ‘Best Retail Park’ by the French Council of Shopping Centres (CNCC), and Riedel Wine Bar & Cellar in Bangkok won the ICSC RECon VIVA Global Award for ‘Best Retail (Small Format)’.
Research and development
Chapman Taylor constantly investigates, and innovates in, the latest design and construction techniques. We are industry-leading experts in Building Information Modelling (BIM) - investing in cutting-edge Desktop Virtual Reality technology to further enhance the design process and allowing clients to get a clear 3D vision of their projects before and during construction. We also continue to publish, research and speak at leading conferences.
We have intensified our Insight programme on the chapmantaylor.com website. Within each of our industry sectors, we have employees undertaking research and development, with recent insights published in thought leadership papers and presentations to clients on topics such as the future of workplace design and on modular construction.
Looking to the year ahead
We have many projects under construction in all our key market sectors, with notable schemes across the world in places such as China, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
Caspian Waterfront in Baku, Azerbaijan, will be a 120,000m² entertainment centre over five floors. A central ‘flame’ tower completes eight angled glass façades inspired by Azerbaijan’s national emblem
Global 100, a breathtaking new Chinese theme park on Hainan Island, is approaching completion, while our competition-winning, 1,380-hectare urban masterplan for Daxing New Town in Beijing is now in design development.
The Cove, our luxury residential development at Koh Phangan in Thailand, is set to complete soon. In Vietnam, work has begun on the 728-hectare Mui Dinh Ecopark, which includes seven hotels, an ecological park, 500 villas and other amenities.
Construction will commence at our projects Altstadtquartier Büchel in Aachen and Shopping Promenade Claye Souilly near Paris
In Germany, work is underway on the urban masterplan at Plaza Grafinger Strasse in Munich and on the City Plaza urban development in Wuppertal, while construction will commence on our urban regeneration project at Aachen’s medieval city centre, Altstadtquartier Büchel.
In the UK, the design for the 54,000m² Axiom centre in Castleford, the largest out-of-town retail and leisure development in England this century continues to progress. We are also continuing to bring to fruition the redevelopment of Coventry city centre, among several large-scale projects across the country.
We are expanding our work within the residential sector across the UK through major residential schemes in London, Bristol and Manchester, as well as residential provision within large-scale mixed-use developments. Construction on Castle Park View in Bristol, which will provide 375 Build-to-Rent and affordable homes in the tallest building in the city, will get underway in the coming year. Work will also continue on Kampus in Manchester city centre, which will see 500 apartments being delivered entirely for the Build-to-Rent sector.
With our continued emphasis on designing and delivering world-class, ambitious and commercially realistic designs, we look forward to 2019 bringing further global success to cap our sixtieth anniversary celebrations.
