Chapman Taylor and HBO Architects design sensitive renovation of historic Castello di Velona Resort in Tuscany
Chapman Taylor, in partnership with HBO Architects, is designing the sensitive renovation of the Castello di Velona Resort in Montalcino, Tuscany.
Castello di Velona is a fortress castle dating back to the eleventh century, located on a hill overlooking the entire Val d'Orcia. The property sits within a beautiful landscape of olive trees and vineyards, the latter of which produce the world-famous Brunello di Montalcino wine.
The castle’s current form is the result of a sequence of interventions that have changed its architecture and functions several times over the centuries. Its current use as a luxury 5-Star hotel resort, winery and spa has seen several refurbishments and expansions, which have created some functionality problems.
Chapman Taylor and HBO Architects have created a design which will fix those problems, creating a fully integrated and functionally efficient layout while improving the destination’s overall image and offer as well as making the resort accessible all year round.
The restyling and extension project creates a new entrance, an extension for the restaurant, a pool area and bar, a breakfast room, a new roof to cover the cloister and several new suites and rooms within a new winter garden, an existing tower and a new area facing the swimming pool. The resort also offers a thermal spa, a winery and a farm, all of which will be open to the resort’s guests and visitors.
The refurbishment has been designed to respect the magnificent history of the complex and the stunning Tuscan surroundings.
