Chapman Taylor designs interiors concept for Joy City Shopping Centre in Sanya, China
Chapman Taylor’s Interiors team has created a bright and modern design concept for Joy City Shopping Centre in the Chinese city of Sanya.
The 80,000m2 shopping centre, located in the core start-up area of Sanya's headquarters economy, hosts a comprehensive offer in line with the well-known Joy City brand’s centres across China, including retail, catering, entertainment and other services. The centre’s focus is the provision of a variety of well-known fashion brands, which are combined with leisure and entertainment options in a one-stop venue aimed at 18-35-year-olds.
The modern style uses clean, curved lines and neutral-to-warm colours to provide a sense of both calm and vibrancy in five of the centre’s six levels, with excellent visibility throughout. Feature elements are inspired by Sanya’s tropical marine context, including seashells, pearls, tropical plants and tropical fruit.
A large, glazed skylight, designed in the form of a shell, covers the main atrium space, allowing in abundant natural light, while a shell-shaped balcony on the third floor holds a tropical jungle-themed area with tall tropical trees and plants. Escalators rise between levels in a design which provides intuitive wayfinding and creates a strong sense of dynamism and movement, reinforced by the shapes of the feature LED light installations.
The smaller atrium’s design is inspired by the pearl within an oyster shell, particularly the circular floor pattern and the ceiling escalator entrance to the centre’s roof garden, which acts as the main visual focal point in this area. Feature ceiling backlighting also draws the eye upwards.
The lower floors offer a sheltered and intimate commercial space, while the third to sixth floors host landscaped outdoor areas, including a tropical garden F&B area at Level 3, complementing the cultural and tourism functions on these levels.
Our interior design concept creates a bright and sleek environment across five floors of commercial space, providing the ideal ambience for the target demographic of younger, fashion-conscious shoppers.
