Chapman Taylor unveils vision for Baisha River ‘One River, Two Banks’ International Development in Qingdao
Chapman Taylor has developed the urban design masterplan for the Baisha River ‘One River, Two Banks’ International Development in Qingdao, Shandong, China. Spanning 11,150 hectares, the project envisions a landscape-driven urban subcentre that seamlessly integrates mountains, sea, and city life.
A vision of connection and innovation
Guided by the theme “Between Mountains and Sea, the Gravitational Attraction of White Sand,” the plan aims to:
- Strengthen the link between the mountains and sea, enhancing Qingdao’s natural beauty
- Establish a high-quality urban subcentre, attracting innovation and talent
- Create water-sensitive urban spaces, enriching riverside living and recreation
- Enhance commercial and leisure functions, making the district a vibrant hub
Dynamic urban and architectural integration
The former airport complex, a key development feature, is designed as a technology-driven urban landmark. The complex mirrors the nearby lake with its fluid architectural forms and tiered terraces, creating a striking wave-like aesthetic. The masterplan also introduces a three-dimensional commercial network, blending above-ground and underground spaces to offer diverse leisure and retail experiences.
This bold and future-focused masterplan will redefine the Baisha River basin as a sustainable, integrated urban living model, transforming the area into a thriving hub for commerce, culture, and innovation.
