Chapman Taylor wins design competition for Yuanrong Bridge in Shanghai

Chapman Taylor is thrilled to announce that our "Harmony Bridge" design has won first place in the international competition for the Yuanrong Bridge on the Shanghai Zhoudeng Expressway. The competition, initiated by the New Area authorities, sought an iconic and recognisable landmark for the Pudong Canal crossing—a vital traffic gateway for the region.

The Zhoudeng Expressway is a crucial transportation corridor connecting Shanghai’s Eastern Hub, the International Tourism and Resort Zone, the Greater Zhangjiang Area, and the Zhoukang Area. It also forms a key link between the Pudong New Area and the Yangtze River Delta region, making the bridge’s design a prominent addition to the area’s infrastructure.

A visionary design for Pudong's Gateway

Our design was selected for its innovative approach, seamlessly blending functionality with landmark architecture. The double-arched structure features interlocking forms symbolising friendship, exchange, and inclusivity, making it a true "gateway to Pudong." The design reflects strategic positioning and a deep understanding of urban integration, transportation, and the local context.

Spanning the Pudong Canal, the 350m-long and 98m-wide bridge is designed to accommodate six lanes of elevated two-way traffic and ten auxiliary ground-level lanes. Its elegant form, thoughtful alignment with navigation clearance, and adherence to height restrictions ensure practicality without compromising aesthetics.

Key features of the design

  • Harmonious interlocking structure: The double arches create a clean, iconic visual identity.
  • Multifaceted visual appeal: Designed to captivate viewers from elevated roadways, auxiliary roads, and the canal.
  • Symbolic significance: The bridge embodies the spirit of inclusivity and connects Shanghai and the international community.

Chapman Taylor is honoured to collaborate with Shanghai Pudong Project Construction Management Co., Ltd. on this landmark project, setting a new standard for gateway architecture in Shanghai. We look forward to bringing the "Harmony Bridge" to life as a symbol of Pudong’s dynamic future and global outlook.
