Congratulations to St Pancras International on its 150th anniversary

Chapman Taylor offers its congratulations to everyone at St Pancras International in London, which has begun a year of celebrations for its 150th anniversary.

St Pancras was opened on October 1st 1868, and has gone from Victorian masterpiece to near-demolition and subsequent restoration to the much-loved international transport hub it is today.

It is ten years since the opening of Chapman Taylor’s ambitious renovation of the commercial areas at St Pancras, which helped make the venerable station ready for the increased passenger footfall brought about by the introduction of Eurostar services. 62 shops, 15 bars and restaurants and six additional platforms were created in the major reconfiguration plan.

Beer deliveries from Burton-on-Trent’s breweries played a key role in the early history of St Pancras. Our design exposed the original brick arches to the former beer vaults within new fully glazed shopfronts, creating an attractive retail environment which honours the building’s past.

By also opening the platform level to expose the historic undercroft, a new naturally lit main concourse was revealed, acting as the main thoroughfare connecting each of the transport nodes.

With St Pancras now host to Eurostar, HS1 and regular train services as well as an underground station, the wider retail and F&B offer, along with the platform and concourse areas’ reconfiguration, has helped create a significant transportation-led, mixed-use hub which London and the UK can be proud of.
