Construction begins on Chapman Taylor-designed Healthcare Research Campus in Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone

Construction has commenced on the state-of-the-art Healthcare Research Campus in Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Free Trade Area, designed by Chapman Taylor following a competition-winning proposal. The 130,000m² campus will feature three towers aligned in a north-south orientation, optimising natural light throughout the complex.

Seamlessly integrated into the cityscape, the western facades and podiums create a harmonious urban interface. At the same time, the eastern side connects fluidly with the adjacent municipal green space, strengthening the urban landscape.

The campus design balances contemporary aesthetics with the use of timeless materials and textures, expressing a sleek, technological appeal. A key highlight of the project is the open, welcoming landscaping at the main entrance, leading to a beautifully curated courtyard that sets the tone for the entire development.

Designed with both form and function in mind, the site promotes efficient internal user flows and resource sharing through functional zones surrounding the inner courtyards. Elevated gardens on podium rooftops and private terraces on every office floor add to the campus's serene atmosphere, enhancing the spatial quality for its occupants.

The research park is designed to meet the varied needs of its tenants, from laboratories and research facilities to ancillary spaces. This dynamic, multifunctional environment will foster innovation and collaboration, furthering its mission as a centre of scientific advancement.

Chapman Taylor’s design for the Waigaoqiao Healthcare Research and Innovation Park showcases a commitment to architectural excellence and cutting-edge innovation. Upon completion in late 2025, the project is expected to become a landmark in Shanghai, setting new standards for office park architecture.
