Construction begins on the refurbishment of the historic former Queensgate Market building in Huddersfield

Construction has started on site on the first phase of the refurbishment of the historic former Queensgate Market building in Huddersfield, which is part of its strategy to unlock new jobs and economic growth.

Chapman Taylor is the Executive Architect for this flagship Huddersfield scheme, working with BAM Construction, the lead construction contractor chosen by Kirklees Council. This decision marks a significant step forward in the council's ambitious ten-year Huddersfield Blueprint vision.

Planning consent was obtained in early 2024 for the focal point of the project, which involves revitalising the former Queensgate Market and Huddersfield Library buildings. The transformed structures will house a vibrant food hall and a modern museum and gallery. These exciting additions will complement a new community-focused library, a live entertainment venue, and a 350-space car park. A series of public areas will be created to connect these spaces seamlessly.

The project has involved various professional advisors, including development manager Queensberry, planner Pegasus, concept architect Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio, Arup, Turner & Townsend, and landscape architect Re-form. The consultant team working with BAM Construction includes Chapman Taylor (Executive Architect), Curtins (Structures and Civils), Gillespies (Landscape), and Buro Happold (Facade Engineering).

Phase one of the project will primarily focus on refurbishing the historic Queensgate Market site. The site will be transformed into a contemporary food hall, a modern library, and an outdoor public square. The project is expected to reach completion in the winter of 2025.

In addition to the initial phase, future stages of the scheme will include integrating the museum and art gallery within the grade two listed building that formerly housed the town's library.

The comprehensive revamp of Huddersfield town centre is poised to breathe new life into the area, providing residents and visitors with vibrant spaces, cultural attractions, and enhanced community facilities.
