Exterior renovation of Hotel Almaty completed in Kazakhstan
The Chapman Taylor-designed renovation of a landmark modernist hotel exterior in Almaty, Kazakhstan, has been completed.
Hotel Almaty was built in the modernist style common in the 1960s Soviet Union, and became a well-known landmark in the Kazakh city – even appearing on banknotes. Poor finishing led to the building requiring renovation in the 1970s, with cheaper materials used, followed by larger-scale changes in the 1990s.
In 2014, Chapman Taylor was asked to plan a reconstruction of the hotel in a way which allowed “the return of the historical appearance”.
The old balconies, including their inappropriate blue plastic fencing and windows, were replaced – enhancing the spectacular views across the city and to the mountains. The exterior renovation aims to give the building a new face in keeping with the architectural history of the hotel, yet appropriate for the 21st century.
