Pathé Cinemas inaugurates its first multiplex in Flanders, Belgium, following a Chapman Taylor-led refurbishment
On 21 November, the fully refurbished Pathé Genk cinema celebrated its grand opening. The event brought together the Pathé team, local officials, influencers, and representatives from Chapman Taylor, who led the refurbishment.
Located within the historic C-mine site in the Flemish city of Genk—a vibrant cultural and creative hub established on a former coal mine—the cinema seamlessly blends industrial heritage architecture with Pathé's bold, contemporary design. The refurbishment preserved and integrated original ironwork and tiling, complementing Pathé’s signature minimalist yellow-and-grey aesthetic.
Chapman Taylor transformed the foyers, shops, and facilities into modern, visitor-focused spaces that reflect Pathé’s brand ethos. The 1,700 m² renovation of the 10-screen cinema was carried out in two phases, allowing the venue to remain operational throughout the works.
Previously operated by another company, the cinema was acquired by Pathé as part of its strategic return to the Belgian market. The Genk location is one of several Belgian cinemas undergoing refurbishment following Pathé’s re-entry through the acquisition of multiple multiplexes.
The refurbishment at Pathé Genk represents a comprehensive upgrade designed to enhance the visitor experience, merging bold, contemporary design with respect for the site’s industrial heritage. Chapman Taylor is proud to have played a key role in this exciting transformation, strengthening Pathé’s presence in Belgium and expanding our diverse portfolio of cinema designs across Europe and the Middle East.
