The project brief was to design a series of vehicle and pedestrian bridges across the green corridors in the Science and Technology Area of the Xiong’an Masterplan, which will be home to the new Science Park, University Park, Internet Industrial Zone and Innovation Square as well as a mix of other uses and amenities.
The inspiration for Chapman Taylor’s design came from interpreting key elements of traditional Chinese landscape paintings in the character and form of the bridges: mountain, island, boat and trail.
The concept is well suited to the site’s context, as Xiong’an is a new city designed according to the latest urban design strategies, but with traditional Chinese characteristics. The bridges appear in sequence across the ecologically valuable valleys that run through the central area and are themselves fully integrated elements of the landscape.
The bridges act to integrate the new city’s green space, its circulation routes and its urban forms and functions.
