Visit The Gingerbread City in London
We were delighted to be invited to take part once again in The Museum of Architecture’s hugely popular annual exhibition The Gingerbread City. Our Bristol, London and Manchester studios have all contributed.
Returning to Motcomb Street in London’s Belgravia, this year’s exhibition presents not just one edible city but five miniature cities across five different climate zones: Polar, Continental, Temperate, Dry and Tropical.
The Manchester studio chose a plot in the Continental zone for ‘Fudge Festival Hall,’ a building that can adapt, both to the piping-hot temperatures and brain-freezing blizzards. To successfully design a building that can flourish within and nourish extreme environments is by way of educating on how we can prepare buildings for the climate emergency threatening all our continents.
The London studio design, ‘Glacier Mint Plaza,’ can be found in the Polar region. This part of the world presents a unique challenge in creating liveable communities in hostile climatic conditions. But by integrating our designs sympathetically into the environment and respecting the ecology, wildlife and needs of the gingerbread communities, we can enhance well-being and promote a real sense of community.
The Bristol studio design is in the Tropical zone. 'The Cascades Renewal Retreat’ is an eco-tourism destination, engaging with local ecology through sustainable and responsible design. A restoration of the once toxic-filled and polluted landscape, this scheme articulates the symbiotic relationship between architecture and its local environment.
The Gingerbread City is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the creativity and innovation of UK architects, landscape architects, engineers and designers in a fun and accessible way. It’s an established ‘must-see’ event in the London festive calendar.
