Working at Chapman Taylor as a Student - Interview with Aleksandra Wisniowska intern in our Düsseldorf Studio
Could you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Aleksandra Wisniowska. I am 23 years old and currently in the sixth semester of my Bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering at UCL University College in Odense, Denmark. One requirement for the sixth semester is a mandatory 20-week internship, and I am very grateful to have completed this at Chapman Taylor in Düsseldorf.
What were your expectations for the internship, and were they met?
My goal was to gain as much experience as possible. I had the opportunity to work in teams and support various planning tasks, and my expectations were more than met.
What were your tasks at Chapman Taylor, and what did you enjoy?
I started by creating presentations and developing design plans in the design department. Additionally, I conducted site analyses and researched different project concepts.
I collaborated closely with the interior design department and assisted in material selection.
Furthermore, I had the chance to contribute to a large project and support the planning team. I conceptualised details, compiled area calculations, and was mainly responsible for providing material samples.
My tasks varied greatly, allowing me to learn about many different areas of architecture and projects.
Were there tasks or projects that you found particularly challenging? If so, which ones and why?
My biggest challenge was working with programs with a design aspect, like Adobe software, with which I had no prior experience. I mainly worked with technical programs like BIM-related software in my studies.
How helpful was your prior knowledge?
My prior solid knowledge of the BIM program Revit and technical details proved very helpful. Additionally, I could effectively apply the time management skills I acquired during my studies.
What new knowledge have you gained?
I learned the most in design, particularly regarding software skills, style, and critical thinking. It was also fascinating to experience the working life and participate in project meetings.
How did you experience collaboration within the team?
I felt very well looked after by my colleagues. The office has a friendly and familial atmosphere, which gave me a good feeling from day one. My colleagues made plenty of time for me, allowing me to learn a lot during my internship.
Can you take anything away to help your studies?
The professional experience and the knowledge I gained will significantly help me with my graduation project.
Any final thoughts?
I enjoyed my time at Chapman Taylor Dusseldorf and would like to sincerely thank everyone on the team for the wonderful experience that made this internship so special.
