Updating an outdated retail concept
In 2016, Chapman Taylor won a design competition for the complete refurbishment of the Creteil Soleil Shopping Centre. The centre had not been refurbished since the 1970’s when it was built. The client, Klepierre, was impressed by our strong brand concept and commitment to providing a modern client experience. The centre will be certified BREEAM Excellent and the WELL Core and Shell certification will be Silver.
A part of "Le Grand Paris"
The refurbishment enables Creteil Soleil to become a part of a wider urban project, “Le Grand Paris.” This project aims to create easily accessible amenities (a '15-minute city’) and public spaces. A public passage on the first level of Creteil Soleil is open 24-hours a day to enable access between the metro station and the residential neighbourhood on the other side. The central square of the mall hosts entertainment shows and exhibitions for visitors and the local community to enjoy.
A coordinated approach
Chapman Taylor’s Madrid studio undertook all project phases, including the final site design management (during the construction phase) and coordination of MEP and structural engineers. They worked alongside the Brussels studio with regard to licencing and other local processes. The process was challenging yet successful, as renovations were undertaken at night, allowing the shopping centre to reopen each day.
A revitalised mixed-use offering
The revitalised centre now boasts 247 shops over two floors, one floor of F&B containing 57 restaurants, and 18 cinema rooms. The renovation budget was €50 million. Several spaces were completely reconfigured to provide a better atmosphere for shopping and natural lighting was improved by opening and modernising the existing skylights. Elegance and simplicity are reflected throughout, in the choice of flooring, balustrades and seating areas, for example.
