Restoring a venerable retail institution to its former glory
Shanghai No. 1 Department Store, once the largest in the Far East, was opened in 1936, and our renovation scheme is designed to reimagine the famous store while restoring it to its former glory. The old department store and two adjacent buildings will total 110,000m² in retail space, including the department store renovation, dramatic atrium spaces and a Shanghai Alley-themed level.
Carefully designed for its target markets
The old No.1 Department Store building is being reconfigured to revive the original interior and allow for unimpeded views of the coffered ceiling and reinstated column capitals – themselves updated with a modern twist, adding Art Deco decoration and ceiling lighting to emphasise these important central features. The mix of tenants on each level has been carefully selected to set the correct tone for the target market.
Elegantly themed malls
The newer, adjoining, No.1 Department Store building (2006) will be made up of two key themes. The Art Deco-themed Grand Theatre will consist of high-end outlets with traditional mall-type shopfronts, open fronts and a large promotional space. The Phoenix Tree, meanwhile, sits on the upper levels and will be relaxing shopping environment reminiscent of the tree-lined streets of the French Concession era, with open shopfronts lining an atrium which also allows for a large promotional space.
Chapman Taylor's competition-winning renovation design for the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store will help ensure the store's continuing success in the age of online shopping.
A new addition aimed at younger shoppers
The final phase of the renovation upgrades the nine-storey former Oriental Shopping Centre, originally constructed in 1996. Sitting across the pedestrian street from the No.1 Building. This part of the complex incorporates completely open shopfronts and open retail space using contemporary designs and vibrant displays, with the intention of attracting a younger demographic. It is linked by sky-bridges on three levels to the old No.1 Department Store Building.
