Chapman Taylor appointed to design Jersey Airport remodelling
Chapman Taylor is pleased to be acting as Design Team Lead as part of the Ramboll UK framework with Ports of Jersey for its new combined arrivals and departures terminal at Jersey Airport.
The project, which forms part of the airport’s overall masterplan, has been under development for some time but is now in the public domain, and a planning application will be submitted shortly.
The project was in part initiated by the growth of the airport as well as the need to adjust some of the airport infrastructure to meet regulatory requirements. This has provided the opportunity to develop a scheme which will meet the client’s and team’s aspiration of creating a world-class modern gateway to Jersey, reflecting worldwide trends and incorporating a unique Jersey Club to reflect the special qualities of the island.
The project includes the remodelling and extension of the existing airport terminal to increase capacity and enhance passenger experience. The current arrivals building will be removed on a phased basis, with construction of the redesigned integrated terminal taking place in a manner which allows the airport to continue operating.
A double-height atrium with glulam timber trusses will house larger departure gates, all overlooking the aviation apron. A new mezzanine level will house the airside departures lounge, while the new arrivals facility will be created to bring it within the regulatory requirements for its safety transition zone.
Approximately 6,500m² of new and refurbished floor-space will be created in a 160m long, double-height extension which gives the terminal the feel of an international airport. Routes between all areas of the terminal will be made more intuitive. The use of natural daylight will be maximised by opening up the 120m-long roof light, and the scheme’s flexible layout and transparency make wayfinding easier, contributing to passengers’ peace of mind.
Chapman Taylor’s Head of Transportation, Peter Farmer, says: “Working with the airport to create the balance between the international and local flavour in a way that is relevant for today’s traveller has been fun. Form, materials, lighting and artwork will play key roles, as well as how the terminal will be operated by the airport and its partners.”
With the submission of a planning application, it is anticipated that construction will start in autumn 2018 and complete within three years. Informal drop-in sessions will take place in January 2018 to allow members of the planning and design team to further explain their vision for the airport to interested members of the public.
