Chapman Taylor creates a residential masterplan for Al Wajbah in Doha, Qatar
Chapman Taylor has created a luxury residential masterplan for Al Wajbah in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The 425,000m2 project is situated to the south of the city’s Emiri Guard Compound and is surrounded by desert on two sides, with a large green area nearby on the eastern side. It is well connected to the main highways in this part of the city and also to the Chapman Taylor-designed Mall of Qatar complex.
Drawing inspiration from the landscape and the cultural and architectural heritage of Qatar, a special emphasis is placed on the importance for life of water and vegetation as a key design theme. The architecture complements and respects the site and its natural characteristics, creating a seamless progression of external and internal spaces while carefully layering public and private areas. A key focus is placed on creating a pedestrian-friendly environment, with pleasant walkways and jogging tracks for residents.
The entrance to the site is designed as a luxurious gateway, marked by the pleasing sight and sounds of a large water fountain in an environment surrounded by lush trees and featuring works of contemporary art. A club house offers a range of sport, activity and dwell spaces for residents and guests, helping to engender a sense of community and providing a venue for fun and relaxation.
The heart of the masterplan is provided by the luxury, two-level villas, each with their own private courtyards, garages and private gardens with fountains and swimming pools. The large windows offer wonderful views of the landscape, while mashrabiya screens provide welcome shade during the middle of the day as well as an interesting visual interplay of light and shadow. The villas offer a place of calm and luxury for their residents; somewhere to be in touch with nature and water.
The scheme’s climax is The Monument, a series of lakeside arches and fountains around which residents and visitors can dwell, walk, run, ride a bike or sail small boats. The spectacular fountain welcomes people with a sensory mix of water movement, lights and sounds, while the architecture is designed to pay homage to the culture and heritage of Doha and Qatar.
