Chapman Taylor part of team appointed to design Western Sydney Airport terminal
A team led by Zaha Hadid Architects and COX Architecture which includes Chapman Taylor has been appointed to design the new Western Sydney International Airport in Australia.
The team won an international design competition which involved a field of 40 national and international applicants.
The new airport will serve as a catalyst for Sydney’s westwards expansion in coming years, forming part of the new Parkland City urban hub. The airport will be built in four phases over 40 years – all masterplanned to allow for easy and fully integrated future expansion.
Chapman Taylor was invited by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Cox Architecture (CA) to be part of the team, with our role being focused on the airport’s commercial and user experience and revenue potential.
Our concept is rooted in a strong sense of place – being both proudly Australian and providing a fitting gateway for Western Sydney. The design’s colours and materiality evoke the Australian Bush, the classic Australian verandah, the great Australian light, the ochre landscape and the open country for which the region, and Australia, is renowned.
These facets will overlay a mindset-planned environment which showcase the best that Western Sydney has to offer, with a curated retail, F&B, market, craft and cultural experience complemented by a strong focus on wellbeing.
The main concession passenger area has been planned to allow for passenger dwell and ease of flow so that passengers can relax and enjoy the dwell space longer. Best-in-class wayfinding, FIDS and time-to-gate information will reduce passenger stress.
The dwell area, including retail and F&B offers, will be supplemented by a pioneering craft market, permeable and flexible to allow rotating pop-up retail spaces promoting local and global brands. There will also be innovative, experience-led concept retail space.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this well-considered and sustainable design – Chapman Taylor looks forward to being a part of this exciting and innovative project.
