Enlivening external spaces with Digital LED displays
On many of our mixed-use designs around the world, particularly those which are retail- or leisure-led, digital LED installations play a prominent role in visually shaping the developments and creating an exciting and dynamic environment for visitors to those spaces. From large screens showing moving images to multi-installation light displays and wayfinding/information signage, digital LED can profoundly and positively transform the look and feel of a space.
External LED displays can be of particular importance. They can be used to draw attention from far away, advertising the development and its offers to potential customers who might otherwise have overlooked it. For example, more colourful and dynamic exterior displays can be used to target a younger demographic, while more restrained design can help attract an upscale, affluent market. They can serve as a great design tool, functioning as architectural features in their own right. They can also draw attention to the entrances, subtly drawing people inside.
Importantly, a striking digital LED display can help to activate the development’s surroundings and create a sense of buzz, setting the scene to encourage vibrancy and to enliven the atmosphere. The overall effect can provide a feeling of community – a place which is full of life and worth visiting for the experience. It also makes a landmark of the development, memorable and easily recognisable.
Chapman Taylor has worked alongside LED specialists to create popular and attractive external spaces with digital light installations.
For example, the LED welcome display at the Chapman Taylor-designed Torrecárdenas shopping centre in Almeria in south-east Spain is a striking focal point. The stunning digital display was created by Necsum Technology for Emotion to greet visitors to the centre and provides a visually immersive focal point, with content ranging from excerpts of well-known local films, 3D animation, digital art and interactive augmented reality.
Necsum was also responsible for creating and installing extraordinary digital displays both internally and externally at Chapman Taylor-designed shopping centres – SCCE’s Plaza Rio 2 and Klépierre’s Plenilunio, both in Madrid.
Meanwhile, at Prague’s mixed-use Flow Building on Wenceslas Square, a subtle and dynamic LED external display enhances the striking building and makes it a visually attractive new night-time presence in the prominent location.
