Retail: Go-ahead for Chapman Taylor designed Department Store in Döppersberg, Germany
Wuppertal City Council has just given the go-head for a planned department store in Döppersberg, a large redevelopment site between the train station and city centre.
“Today is an important day for Döppersberg and Wuppertal” announced Mayor Peter Jung, after 42 of 65 council members voted in favour of the 30 million Euro scheme which Chapman Taylor's design studio in Düsseldorf designed for Irish developer Signature Capital.
Following the positive result, the developer has announced plans to expand the scheme with new shops around the department store and along a new bridge linking Döppersberg to the city centre.
The city itself is investing 140 million Euros in the redevelopment project, which shall greatly improve the area around the historic train station.
The mayor added: “It is important for the city that this prime retail relocation has a department store designed in a modern architectural style that will have lasting value”.
Deal Magazine from Germany reports that the investors are convinced that this project will attract new clientele to the region and that the innovative architecture will symbolise the growing strength of the City.
