Madrid: Chapman Taylor presents at the Large Scale Architectural Projects Conference in Spain
The 6th annual conference on Large Scale Architectural Projects was held at the Confortel Suites Madrid Hotel on November 20. At the event, 11 of Spain’s leading architectural practices were invited to speak, of which Chapman Taylor Madrid was one. Jorge Alonso represented Chapman Taylor and presented the Madrid design studios largest project to date ‘The Mall of Qatar’ in Doha, Qatar. Jorge spoke about the challenges the design team has overcome in terms of developing what is set to be one of the largest shopping in the Middle East.
Launched at Cityscape Qatar 2013 and set to open in Dec 2015, Mall of Qatar is intended to be a world-class retail, sports and entertainment destination and has a total build area of 388,000m2, the equivalent of 50 FIFA football pitches. It will be located 20 minutes from downtown Doha, at the intersection of Al Rayyan Highway and Celebration Road, adjacent to the popular Al Rayyan Sports Club and a future FIFA 2022 World Cup Stadium.
Mall of Qatar will have over 1,750,000 square feet of retail leasable space on 3 levels in addition to underground and surface parking for 7,000 cars. The 400 shops from luxury to the world’s leading powerhouse brands and an exciting array of food, beverage and entertainment will make this the premier destination in Qatar.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, it is estimated that by 2021, international tourist arrivals in Qatar are forecast to reach over 2 million, and they are expected to spend an additional QR 3.7 billion (just over $1 Billion) in Qatar during their stay. To cope with the increase in tourism that the Mall of Qatar will bring to the country, a five-star fashion-themed hotel is also being developed.
