Reel Cinemas at Dubai Mall wins “Best Leisure Interior (Dubai)” at the 2018 International Property Awards (Africa-Arabia)
Chapman Taylor’s design for the 26-screen Reel Cinemas at Dubai Mall has been awarded “Best Leisure Interior (Dubai)” at the 2018 International Property Awards (Africa-Arabia).
The awards cover over 45 different categories, and the winners are automatically entered for the global International Property Awards, which takes place in London in December.
Chapman Taylor renovated the Reel Cinema at The Dubai Mall, creating a state-of-the-art, 26-screen cinema complex, the best cinematic experience in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The cinema complex is operated by Emaar Entertainment, a subsidiary of Emaar PJSC, which is the developer behind The Dubai Mall, the biggest shopping centre in the world.
As well as being the largest cinema in the UAE, Reel Cinema at The Dubai Mall is the world’s first cinema with all screens using laser RGB projectors and Dolby Atmos sound, adopts the world’s first fully automated sales process and is the first cinema in the world without a concession stand.

In an effort to improve customer choice, the cinema options have been increased from two to seven. These include regular cinemas, luxury seats within regular cinemas, a Dolby Atmos Cinema, a Barco Escape cinema, an MX4D motion cinema, dining cinemas anchored by US celebrity chef Guy Fieri and VIP Platinum cinemas.
The previous layout and circulation routes, which led to crowding and wayfinding difficulties, have been massively simplified. Ticket sales have been fully automated, with self-service swipe screens at the four entrance points allowing all ticket and food purchases to occur at the same time.

Large LED screens clad the walls at entrances and in the lobby, and a Twitter wall has been installed for people to upload their messages and see them appear live on the screen. There is also a striking cinema access corridor, with curved and inclined LED screens creating a stunning visual effect.
Chapman Taylor worked in conjunction with Emaar Entertainment to conceive, create, develop and deliver this unique project, which has set the benchmark for many cinemas to follow.
Congratulations to David Wallace and the Leisure team, and to Emaar, for this well-deserved award!
