Retail: Mall of Qatar becomes a platform for global art
Chapman Taylor's 500,000 sqm Mall of Qatar is leading the way in blending art with architecture, as it becomes home to seven pieces of original artwork from across the globe. Art is important in Qatar at the moment with the government and the Royal Family supporting it as an essential part of the country's branding. It has started to regard sculpture, painting, media art, film making and, of course, architecture and amongst its Middle Eastern neighbours, Qatar is now considered as setting a benchmark both for its selective art collections and for its daring architecture and urban design.
The art pieces in the Mall have been designed specifically for the mall and will be incorporated throughout as light pieces and installations. Each artwork is unique: the main entrance will host the 'Wall of Egrets' composed of nine Egrets which are portrayed internally as illuminated birds as they take off from the ground and fly up a cascading wall of water. Visitors will encounter the 'Rings' at the main entrance of the building, comprising of seven inner hoops with gold brush coating that will be hung from the atrium glass roof.
Further inside the mall sit the 'Bow Ties' artwork, inspired by the type of necktie worn by men for formal events, followed by the 'Pins', a sculpture reminiscent of a pincushion used by tailors designing bespoke suits and dresses and one of the most treasured pieces of women's fashion, the 'Shoe' will be displayed inside the third dome.
In the family entertainment area, visitors will see 'The Acrobats', a human figures in the form of a tightrope walker, a trapeze artist, a unicyclist, a character balancing on a ball, and an aerial performer. Finally, the 'Footballs' is a colourful sculpture that pays homage to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The original concept ideas for the artwork were imagined and designed by Chapman Taylor.
