Sterling Place Residential Project Breaks Ground in New Malden, London
A groundbreaking ceremony on January 17th marked the initiation of Barrett London's ambitious residential project, 'Sterling Place,' set to revitalise the historic site once owned by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co in New Malden, London. The project, designed by Chapman Taylor, aims to provide 456 new one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, of which 169 will be affordable homes.
The development pays homage to the rich history of Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., a pioneering printing company known for its contribution to polymer banknotes and postage stamps for various countries. Sterling Place incorporates eco-friendly features, including podium gardens, play areas, and extensive tree and shrub planting, contributing to a 10% biodiversity net gain in the area.
Designed with environmental sustainability in mind, each energy-efficient home is projected to achieve an EPC rating of B or above. The site boasts 240 electric charging points, over 900 cycle storage spaces, and solar panels, showcasing a commitment to green living.
Sterling Place, replacing a derelict former print works, features nods to the original site's history through muted green tones and patterns inspired by early 1900s banknotes. The development consists of seven staggered-height blocks, ranging from seven to fourteen storeys, offering panoramic views over south-west London and towards the City.
The architectural vision, inspired by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co's legacy, incorporates elements such as contrasting brickwork inspired by the Book of British Ferns and a color scheme based on the silver fern plant from New Zealand.
The groundbreaking was attended by Chapman Taylor Director Michael Swiszczowski who commented "Chapman Taylor are delighted to have been appointed to design Sterling Place which will provide badly needed homes for the New Malden area. We have designed Sterling Place to the highest possible sustainability standards as well as creating a unique design narrative that weaves together the past and present that we are extremely proud of".
Sterling Place is scheduled for completion in 2027, with the first phase delivering homes in Winter 2025.
