Zhangzhou Wuyue Plaza, China: Chapman Taylor’s latest competition winning design
Zhangzhou has been an important trading port in China since ancient times, making it an indispensable city along the maritime silk road. Its seafaring culture was the inspiration behind Chapman Taylor’s winning design for an impressive new plaza in the city.
In the mid-to-late Ming Dynasty, the port of Zhangzhou was the only legal private maritime port in China. The maritime silk road which extended from the port reached 47 countries and regions. Zhangzhou became the hub of overseas traffic and trade in Southeast Asia and an integral part of the history of the development of “sea silk”.
The interior design of Zhangzhou Wuyue Plaza is based on the seafaring characteristics of Zhangzhou city. It is adjacent to the sea and grows towards the sea. The interior design concept allocates different themes to each atrium space. The street at ground level is ‘Treasure Bay' and the atriums are 'Shining Sea', 'Ocean Theatre' and 'Ocean Concert Hall' - each one with distinct characteristics. There is also a themed 'Concert Hall at Sea' and a children’s atrium, 'Adventures at Sea'. Materials and colours vary according to each theme, making it easy for customers to distinguish their location, explore the space and of course, take photographs to record their experiences.
The interior design concept was based on four themed areas:
